we talked enough
"Shut up" is not good manners, but it sure gets the message across. Most of us probably have a friend, colleague, or relative who doesn't believe in the economy of words. They love details, backstory, and repetition, even when they don't make sense. (Oh, and how the magic of their own voices is like music to your ears!) Perhaps your chatty friend is distracting himself from more important activities or insulting others and refusing to change his behavior after several previous requests. It's a challenge to shut up such talkative people. Some people don't like to share the stage.
Whether you said "shut up" or just made a wish, celebrate the direct message those words convey with a playlist of pop, rock, and country songs telling someone to shut up or rest. 🇧🇷
1. "Cale a boca e dance" de Walk the Moon
As the two teens look at each other on this catchy 2014 rock song, they discover they are instant fireworks, dance floor destiny. The boy accuses his new girlfriend of holding back, but that doesn't let her get between them. 🇧🇷shut up and dance with meanswers the bossy Miss Thang coquettishly, and he knows they were made for each other.
The song is based on a real-life experience the vocalist had when he met his girlfriend. Walk the Moon was a one-hit wonder with this song (at least until now).
2. "Shut Up And Kiss Me" by Mary Chapin Carpenter
Socially awkward people need love like everyone else, maybe even more. In this upbeat, Grammy-winning country song, the narrator has had a long dry spell in the romance department, and the overly talkative woman is nervous about admitting to her date that she likes him. He's the shy, quiet guy and she's the sex offender who tells him exactly what he needs:
"It's been a long time since anyone whispered
Shut up and kiss me."
Mary Chapin Carpenter pioneered the catchy but decidedly unromantic notion of "shut up and kiss me" with this 1994 country song. the same title, but with different letters.
3. "Shut Up" de Greyson Chance
As the guy lays on the beach with his love in this 2019 pop single, his intense romantic attraction has him sweating and he fears his partner is pulling away. Due to his nervous energy, he chatters and feels that the solution to his meaningless barking is to kiss his lover. Her eyes signal him to shut up and frown:
And when your eyes meet mine I know I talk too much
So give me your lips and baby I'll shut up."
4. "Calculus" by the Black Eyed Peas
"Cale to mouth, cale to mouth, cale to mouth.(Speaking of disrespect to your partner). This is not how you build a happy love story. The couple in this 2003 pop song brew a toxic drink under the guise of love, but their troubled relationship falls apart. 🇧🇷
As they argue heatedly, emotions run high and they exchange threats to end the relationship. (What unites them?) The song was not a huge hit in the United States, but it resonated with the rest of the world, topping the charts in many other countries.
5. "Yakety Yak" de The Coasters
The Coasters received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award for this 1958 R&B/rock 'n' roll classic about a teenage son and his parents doing housework. Under threat of not going out with friends, the teenager is given tasks such as taking out the trash and cleaning the room. Any denial he utters is answered with the refrain: "yak yak; no replyThe Coasters were inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
6. "Shut up and drive" de Rihanna
In this bawdy 2007 new wave song, Rihanna is looking for a lover who can handle her curves. She often refers to cars and car parts when addressing her potential lover as the "driver" who has the keys. The naughty tells him to shut up and drive.
7. "You Talk Too Much" by Run DMC
The legendary hip-hop group summed it up with this classic mantra from their 1985 hit:
"You're talking too much
you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Dude, you never shut up."
The narrator directly tells his talkative friend at 4-1-1 that "Your mouth moves fast and your brain moves slow"y"You are the instigator, the orator of the people.“The talker's talk is boring, it spreads rumors, it does not clarify facts and causes confusion with incessant gossip. Talkative Tom just needs him to rest.
Run DMC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
8. "A Little Less Talk" de Elvis Presley
Elvis, control yourself! The King gets impatient just "talking" to his girlfriend in this 1968 rock song, and there's no hiding it. She tells her boyfriend to stop talking, get his coat and go for a walk with him. Elvis' aggressive, urgent insistence feels neither safe nor sexy. say, for example"Chica'It's getting late, I'm worrying about waiting'and commands its intended mate to "cLet go of your mouth and open your heart and baby please me."
9. "Shut Up and Drive" de Chely Wright
There is a wise voice within all of us that knows what is good for us and ensures that we act in our best interests. Sometimes we listen and sometimes we tell him to shut up.
The woman in this 1997 country ditty musters up the courage to let go of a man who broke her heart, and the inner voice tells her to turn on the radio and not look in the rearview mirror. The voice tells him to shut up and drive so he doesn't change his mind. Good advice.
10. "Shut Up and Fish" de Maddie & Tae
When the young couple head out to the local lake in this 2015 country song, only one of them has bass fishing on their minds. Dating country girl is a city talker who is trying very hard romantically. As the narrator casts his parchment and waits for the fish to bite, the boy comes over to snuggle with it. (Stops rolling his eyes.) He squeezes her shoulder, tries to hold her trembling hand, and professes sweet love. When he refuses to drop hints or accept a request to shut up and fish, she ends up having to stick him in the lake so he'll understand.
11. "Shut Up And Kiss Me" by Echosmith
Why can't this guy take his crush to the next level and just kiss the girl? The narrator of this 2020 pop song gets the right vibe from her love interest that their attraction is mutual. But the anxious guy keeps talking. He hesitates, makes small talk, walks away and talks about random things that aren't relevant. Understandably, she gets more frustrated:
"I'm confused
I want to know why
You don't, you don't, you don't just..."

The Grammy-winning star's love life was filled with drama when she andsaturday night liveComedian Pete Davidson started dating in May 2018. The two dated for five months and quickly got engaged. 13. "Cale to mouth!" by SimplePlan
Music critics often have a major impact on an artist's career, and their public comments (fair or otherwise) can hurt even the most successful stars. (Just ask Taylor Swift.)
In this punk-pop song, Canadian rock band Simple Plan lashes out at selfish music critics who want to influence the nature of their music. The band wantsset a quick choke' at such people, but instead of doing so, they rudely rebuke their snarky critics and tell them to shut up.
14. "¡STFU!"
The woman in this 2020 nu metal song is fed up with microaggressions, those subtle and everyday discriminatory behaviors, intentional and unintentional. She rages at disrespect and wishes she could close these abusive traps.
Fueled by years of being neglected by others for the true multidimensional human being that he is, the narrator repeatedly utters obscene language in anger (e.g.: "Shut your mouth"). Rina Sawayama is an Anglo-Japanese singer-songwriter who alludes to Asian microaggressions in this song.
15. "Shut up and let me go" by The Ting Tings
Breakups can be quick, like ripping off a band-aid, or they can be a grueling, arduous process. The mischievous woman in this 2008 pop song experiences the latter and realizes her ex-partner doesn't love her. Unfortunately, he's been cheating on her and she's finally ready to move on. So the narrator catches up with her forcefully to tell her to go: "Now shut up and let me go."
16. "One Step Closer" do Linkin Park
This debut single from Linkin Park from 2000 revolves around a vulnerable and extremely frustrated narrator who becomes emotionally overwhelmed by all the pressures he faces. The troubled young man warns that he is on edge and about to break. You need to relax, you want to find room to breathe.
However, someone talks to him a lot and this stresses him out even more. To get his point across, he screams
"Shut up when I'm talking to you
Go away Go away
Shut up, I'm about to pass out!"
Frontman Chester Bennington committed suicide in 2017 after years of battling addiction and memories of childhood abuse. Now that we know what to make of their fates, the band's first hit sounds eerily prescient.
17. "Shut up and kiss me" by Whitesnake
Call me crazy, but the expression "shut up and kiss me"It's not sexy, nor is it a good way to get what you want. This energetic 2019 rock song puts another spin on a lover's plea for his partner to stop talking and cut to the chase."Sweet satisfaction is guaranteed.“So there is no more room for words between them. Now shut up and let the action begin.
18. "Quiet Please, There's a Lady on the Stage" de Peter Allen
Based on an actual experience, this graceful 1976 pop ballad asks fellow viewers of a musical performance to slow down and listen to the singer on stage. (After all, they paid to see her perform, right?) The narrator encourages the other guests to appreciate the talent and effort in the music, at least as a courtesy. She also implores her to stand up for the standing ovation at the end as a final celebration for her. Peter Allen was married to Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minelli for several years, and the song honors Garland's memory.
19. Taylor Swift's "You Need To Calm Down"
Taylor Swift's songs are often full of meaning, but the whole point of this 2019 anti-bullying single is to tell haters of all stripes to shut up and stay in her lane. The pop star is calling out internet trolls and urging anti-LGBT fans to stop bullying and just stay away. In particular, she asks them to “control your urge to yell at the people you hate."Although she never says "shut up", it's clear that she meant it: "You need to calm down, you talk too loud."
20. "Hush Hush" by Avril Lavigne
Some questions are better left unanswered. This is the perspective of the narrator in this pop song from 2013, as she reviews a love story that has come to an end. She believed that this was her only true love and that they were meant to be together, but their romance inexplicably fell apart. Finding it fruitless and too painful to dissect her failed love, she simply tells him, "Cale meand encourages him to be happy in life without her. This is the only one that got away.

Rodric – Thank you for your personal reflections on these songs. I will probably have the song Run DMC in the back of my mind at times. I probably grew up around the same time as you; It was popular when I was young. This Elvis Presley song was more decadent than many people probably knew. People often don't pay much attention to lyrics. (Wow.) Thanks for stopping by! Have a good week!

A great list is the songs that tell someone to shut up. I've heard some of them. Enjoyed going through the list, thanks for sharing.

It was a wonderfully fun read! I didn't know there were so many songs about silence. There's a song called Rumours, I think it could fit here too. I've heard the number five so many times it's become an anthem! "Yakety Yak" has been played so many times in my life by all adults, especially teachers.
I grew up with Run DMC. He is not Reverend Run, a minister. I remember the song "You talk too much". I used it a lot as a kid to hit other people during a verbal fight. That's how my group talked on campus.
You gave me an idea of Elvis Presley's music. I don't know what I think of his boldness in this song, or this song I should say now that I know what it involves.
"Hush Hush" and many others here..! I didn't know there were so many versions of Shut Up And Drive! Excellent article, Flourish!

Heidi - Nice to see you again. I hope your dog is fine. I like that you know the song because it sounds really strong. It's a little catchy, but I'm not sure I want to hear it all the time. You might want to tell them to calm down. Have a good weekend.

Peggy - When my very talkative daughter was a little girl, my husband and I used to tell her on car rides that we were playing the silence game. She lost every time. Very talkative and still is. He also speaks loudly. Thanks for reading. I almost missed the song "Yakety Yak". Maybe it was too obvious.

I was disappointed that "Cake-Nugget" was not on the list. Although somewhat vulgar, a very current piece about the socio-political situation in the world. However, there are a lot of good ones here and some new ones I've never heard of!
Linda Lumfrom the state of Washington, USA, on June 10, 2021:
What a fun list. I had no idea there were so many songs about telling someone to "put a sock on" (our house favorite expression). I think a lot of us are getting nervous. I can't think of any to add, you've got them all covered.
Heidi Dornfrom the Chicago area on June 10, 2021:
I immediately thought of Elvis and Deep Purple tracks when I saw the title.
And while I love the Run DMC track (because it's from the 80s), there's a 1960s "You Talk Too Much" by Joe Jones. The only reason I know one is because he's at a barbeque in our area playing 60's music.
I also love Queen RiRi's Shut Up and Drive. I think I'm looking forward to Fast & Furious 9. ;)
Anyway, I wish you a relaxing week! :-D
