The best yarn for fisherman hats
For bucket hats, I recommend using cotton yarn. Cotton fibers are more breathable than other types of yarn, which is important if you want to stay cool in the summer heat. The texture of the cotton yarn also helps the hat keep its shape.
I used Lily Sugar'n Cream yarn for my hat. But feel free to use any brand of cotton you like.
Here are some cotton threads that I recommend:
- Lily Sugar'n Cream:This is the all-time classic among cotton threads:Lily Sugar n 'Crema🇧🇷 This yarn is available in every color imaginable, including stripes and ombre colors. For this hat, you will need one of the larger 4-ounce skeins of yarn.
- Cotton Brand Leon 24/7:Leon brand 24/7 cottonis another good choice for this bucket hat project. This yarn is 100% mercerized cotton, which means it is shinier and slightly softer than Lily Sugar'n Cream.
- crochet plate:finally there iscotton thread dish🇧🇷 This yarn has a tighter twist than other cotton yarns, which means it is less likely to break when crocheting. It is incredibly durable and is also machine washable.
Other fiber blends may also work for this pattern. You can try a blend of cotton and bamboo or cotton and linen for a softer, more flexible hat. And I would also like to try the raffia yarn to make crochet hats. (I don't recommend using acrylic yarn for a sun hat.)

Tips for making a crochet bucket hat
Here are some tips and tricks for creating this pattern.
- This hat is knitted in spiral loops.When starting a new round, use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of the round. When you reach the end of the row, do not turn the work or the chain. Instead, sew the first stitch of the next row into the first stitch of the previous row.
- Be sure to check your meter.Finding the right size makes the difference between a hat that fits and one that's too big. For this pattern, I recommend checking your gauge after completing the crown section. After round 13, the hat should be 6.5 inches wide.
- Remind:If you use a different wire than mine, you could end up with a different gauge. That's fine, just use a larger hook if you need a looser gauge, or a smaller hook if you need a tighter gauge.
- If the brim of your hat is too soft, consider using a smaller hook for the border section. Using a smaller hook creates a denser, stronger fabric that bends less easily. For example, if you made the body of the hat with aHaken 4,0 mm, you can try using a 3.5mm hook for the flap.
- Take breaks frequently.I find that crocheting cotton yarns in a tight gauge is straining the muscles in my hands. To avoid hand strain, I recommend taking frequent breaks.

This hat is the size of an average adult hat, it will fit a head that is 21-22 inches in circumference.

Finding the correct gauge is important for this standard setting.
To test your measurement, knit the crown portion of the hat pattern (Rounds 1-13) and measure the width of the circle. It should be about 4 inches wide by round 9 and 6.5 inches wide by round 13.
If your circle is too small, it means your crochet is too tight and you need to use a slightly larger hook. If your circle is too big, it means your hook is too loose and you need to use a slightly smaller hook.

After round 28, the center part of the hat should measure 3.5 inches. Ideally, the middle part of the hat ends at the top of the ear.

Round 18-20: sc in each st (82 sts)
